What is PCE?

Various industrial and dry cleaning operations involve a solvent called PCE.

PCE is also known as: Perchloroethylene; Perc, Tetrachloroethylene, carbon dichloride, ethylene tetrachloride, Perclene, and tetrachloroethene

By far the most significant exposure to PCE occurs in industrial environment.

The major uses of PCE are in:

Textile and Dry Cleaning Industries (69%)

Metal Cleaning (16%)

Chemical Intermediate (12%).

PCE enters the body by:

Inhalation

Skin Absorption

Ingestion

Skin/Eye Contact

These are called “routes of entry.”

Points of attack are:

Kidneys

Upper Respiratory System

Central Nervous System

The Liver

Eyes

Acute exposure may cause central nervous system depression, hepatic injury, and anesthetic death.

PCE is a carcinogen and an EPA Priority Toxic Pollutant.
